Damian Hodgkiss · Senior staff engineer at AppSumo
I'm an engineer at Sumo Group, where since 2013 I've helped build Sumo.com, KingSumo and the storefront behind AppSumo's software deals. That's a front-row seat to how SaaS products find their first customers.
I also build my own products, so I know how easy it is to ship something and then realise you haven't worked out how anyone will find it.
Every new domain starts at DR 0: content gets you read, authority gets you ranked. I built RankPlan to make that step concrete, the directories that give you a followed link, in the order that matters.
What the numbers mean
The metrics on every card, and how to read them.
Domain rating (DR)
Domain Rating by Ahrefs (ahrefs.com): a 0–100 score for the strength of a site's backlink profile. A link from a DR 70+ directory carries real weight with Google. Below 40 the link itself does little; the listing is for discovery.
Dofollow vs nofollow
A dofollow link passes authority to your domain and helps you rank. A nofollow link doesn't, but it still sends visitors and gets your site indexed. Prioritise dofollow for SEO; don't ignore high-traffic nofollow sites.
Search visits
Estimated monthly visits the directory gets from Google search. It shows whether a listing there can be found by people searching. It leaves out direct, social and newsletter traffic, so launch platforms are busier than the number suggests.
Free, freemium, paid
Free: submit at no cost. Freemium: a free listing exists, but paying gets you featured or skips a queue that can run for weeks. Paid: there's no free option, so weigh the cost against DR and traffic.
Launch platform vs directory
Launch platforms (Product Hunt, Uneed) rank you by votes on a given day; the spike is big but short. Directories and review sites list you permanently, so the value accrues slowly through search.
